Seeking to reconcile is the deliberate course of reestablishing friendly relations, harmony, or unity after a disagreement, broken relationship, or alienation.
It involves actively talking the causes of conflict, often requiring empathy, confession, and the initiation of amends. It is frequently described as a, courageous journey towards healing.
Twenty years ago, Jacob had cheated Esau out of the family blessing, and Esau was so angry with his brother that he wanted to kill Jacob. So, before Jacob journeys to Bethel, his guilty conscience, and his fear of what Esau might do to him, force Jacob to make reconciliation with his brother.
Thus, what we see in Gen. 32 is a journey of the cost of reconciliation; the good and the bad. We see God’s grace and of man’s works in this process. We learn of Jacob’s fears and of his trust in God.
In seeking to reconcile… the Lord Will Help You with Your Fears through the power of the Holy Spirit (32:1-2)
Genesis 32:1-2 (BSB) 1 Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God.” So he named that place Mahanaim.
This was an encouraging beginning to what Jacob dreaded to face. It was when Jacob was “on his way” (moving toward reconciliation with Esau) that God’s host came to meet him.
Application: Seeking to reconcile with someone usually makes you feel vulnerable, because you have to let down your shield. It can be a fearful process. But God through the power of the holy Spirit meets us when we go down that road.
He promises to be with you and help you. You will not be alone. In fact, God the Holy Spirit will give you strength and wisdom!
John 14:26 (ESV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
So don’t wait for the courage to begin to reconcile with another, and even God… for God Himself will meet you as you go “on your way.”
Make that personal decision to release all and enjoy the power of forgiveness thus, reconciling, building trust and restore the relationship, as we push the kingdom agenda to the whole world.
